Anti-Asian Violence Prevention Seminar

October 2, 2021 by JAGP

On July 7, 2021 the Japanese Association of Greater Philadelphia organized a seminar that featured experts on the reports of Anti-Asian violence that unfortunately is becoming more common in the United States. The JAGP was joined by the JASGP, the Japanese Christian Church of Philadelphia, The Japanese Language School of Philadelphia, and the Japanese Consulate in New York City. Speakers from the Philadelphia Police Department, the Phila-delphia Office of Human Relations, and the Philadelphia office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The seminar was about 2 hours long and was available to watch on-line through a Zoom link, courtesy of Mr. Tom Thompson, a JAGP board member.

Prior to the seminar, the Governor of Pennsylvania presented a proclamation to the Con-sulate General of Japan in New York, the Japan-America Society of Philadelphia, and our association, stating that our state embraces people of all races, nationalities, and ethnicities and supports the safety and prosperity of the people of our state.

The speakers talked about a wide range of topics, but were mostly concerned with teaching people how to recognize racial harassment and what actions to take if it is encountered. The instances of anti-Asian violence in the Philadelphia are much lower than what has been seen in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and even Atlanta, but it does still exist here according to the Police and FBI. Some past examples mentioned by the FBI helped everyone to understand what is considered dangerous behavior by aggressive people, and what the FBI or the Police can do to help them. Most important, according to the FBI and the Police was that if harassment or violence is experienced, it needs to be reported immediately to the FBI or local police. There was no concern about visa-status or immigration status—only that the violence needs to be reported. The Police said that not reporting the violence or threats of violence only gives aggressive people the confidence that they can be violent without fear of being caught.

The attendance by JAGP members, JASGP members, and church members was very impressive: 41 people attended in-person, despite it being a small room! There were no empty seats! 40 more people attended on-line through Zoom on the their computers, and it was very encouraging that no one left early… even those watching through Zoom. It seemed everyone wanted to hear this important information.

The FBI agents and Police were very impressed with the level of interest from JAGP mem-bers, and the Consulate thought it was the best seminar they had heard on the topic.

We are very appreciative to the Japanese Christian Church for allowing us to use their facility and to JAGP Board member Tom Thompson for organizing the Zoom video conference!

Last but not least, we hope you and your loved ones live in a safe environment.

We stand together!
