新年会2024報告 2024 New Year’s Party Report

会員の皆様、

2024年の新年会は由緒あるMerion Tribute Houseで行われました。この建物は20世紀初頭の精緻な建築様式をそのままに現在まで維持しており、木の梁の天井や壮大な暖炉があるとても魅力的な場所です。この歴史ある素敵な建物で新年会が行えたのはとても幸せです。

例年のように、新年会が始まる前には多くのボランティアによるお餅つきが賑やかに行われました。本物の杵と臼でついた、つきたての柔らかいお餅は何とも言えない美味しさでした。年次総会に次いで、新年会のオープニングは森美樹夫在ニューヨーク総領事・大使からの新年のお祝いのお言葉と日本酒での乾杯で幕を開けました。さらに、フィラデルフィア・カーティス音楽院に通う12歳の天才バイオリニスト「HIMARI」さんの演奏が花を添えました。目を閉じていたらとても12歳とは思えないくらい感情の溢れ出る素敵な演奏でした。HIMARIさんはお忙しかったのですが、今回は彼女のお母様と日本のマネージャーさんがご出席くださいました。

また、今回のお食事はMargaret Kuoレストランからお寿司とお食事のケータリングをし、これまた多くのボランティアさんのご協力のもと、スムーズに配膳ができました。お食事の後は、フィラデルフィアバレエ団のプリンシパルダンサーであり、当会会員でもある伊勢田由香さんの動画を鑑賞。その後伊勢田さんから直々にご挨拶をいただきました。伊勢田さんは様々な国に住んだ経験がありますが、不思議な縁があり、フィラデルフィアにいらっしゃいました。2月末のGiselleのオープニングの日に彼女は主役として踊ります。

今回のハイライトは初めての試みである「Human Bingo」というゲーム。同じテーブルの方とだけではなく、他の沢山の参加者とお話出来たのではないでしょうか？このゲームは、与えられた16の質問に当てはまる人を探すゲームです。皆さんかなり真剣にゲームに参加されていました。知らない方とお話出来たり、知っている人でもその人の違った部分を見つけたりして楽しかったですね。ゲームの後は当会会員の宮原ロイさんのウクレレ漫談！これはまた参加者に笑いをもたらす楽しいひとときになりました。

最後は当会のファンドレイジングを兼ねたラッフル。多くの企業団体様や個人会員の皆様からの寄付により実現いたしました。レストラン券、ギフト券、ブーケやユニークな龍の折り紙、美術館や動物園のチケットや化粧品、そしてグランドプライズはもちろん航空券！様々なラッフル景品がテーブルを飾りました。チョコレートやラーメンなど皆様にお持ち帰りいただくギフトもご提供いただきました。ご寄付いただいた皆様、ラッフルにご参加いただいた皆様、本当にありがとうございました！

新年会の最後は船木会長の三本締めで幕を閉じましたが、その後も皆様には会場の片付けにご協力いただき、心より感謝申し上げます。こうして会員の皆様のご協力を得ながら、会が大成功に終わったことを嬉しく思います。もちろん至らない面もあったかと思いますが、アットホームなな雰囲気で皆様に楽しんでいただけたのではないかと感じています。ご参加いただいた皆様、本当にありがとうございました。

最後に、2024年は元日早々、能登半島の地震で日本は大変なことになりました。今も不便な生活をされている方が多くいらっしゃいますので、今年の新年会では、そのための寄付金箱も用意させていただきました。合計$315のご寄付が集まり、当日の為替レート$1=¥148.12で計算して¥46,658を石川県共同募金会の令和6年能登半島地震災害義援金に郵貯銀行から送金いたしました。皆様に多くのご寄付をいただき、誠にありがとうございました。

Dear Members,

The New Year’s Party for 2024 was held at the historic Merion Tribute House. This building reflects the traditional beauty of the early 20th century, with its wooden beam ceilings and magnificent fireplace, making it a truly charming venue. It was a great pleasure to have our New Year’s Party in this historic and delightful building.

As usual, before the start of the party, there was mochi pounding by many volunteers, followed by a tasting session. The freshly pounded soft mochi, made with real wooden pestles and mortars, was incredibly delicious and delightful. Following the Annual General Meeting, the New Year’s Party began with a New Year’s toast with sake, accompanied by congratulatory remarks from Consul-General and Ambassador Mikio Mori from the Consulate-General of Japan in New York. Furthermore, a video performance by “HIMARI,” a 12-year-old violin prodigy attending the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, added a special touch to the event. Her emotionally charged and wonderful performance made it hard to believe she was only 12 years old. Although HIMARI herself was busy, her mother and manager from Japan graciously attended the event.

The catering for this event was provided by Margaret Kuo Restaurant, offering sushi and eight courses. With the help of many volunteers, the meals were served smoothly. After the meal, we watched a video of Yuka Iseda, a principal dancer with the Philadelphia Ballet and a member of our association. Yuka gave us warm greetings and many of us enjoyed lively conversation with her at the party. Although Yuka has lived in various countries, she has a special connection to Philadelphia. She will be dancing as the lead in “Giselle” on the opening day, February 29.

The highlight of this year’s New Year’s Party was the inaugural “Human Bingo” game, allowing participants not only to interact with those at their tables, but also with many other attendees. This game involved finding people who had to match 16 given questions. Everyone participated enthusiastically, enjoying conversations with both familiar and unfamiliar faces. After the game, there was a ukulele comedy performance by Roy Miyahara, which brought laughter to all the participants and was a fun time.

Lastly, we held a raffle as part of our fundraising efforts, made possible by generous donations from various corporations, organizations, and individual members. Prizes ranged from restaurant vouchers and gift certificates to origami dragons and tickets to museums and zoos, with the grand prize being an airline ticket. Additionally, guests were provided with gifts to take home, such as chocolates and ramen. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who donated and participated in the raffle.

We ended the party with a rousing round of ‘sanbon jime’, a traditional Japanese hand-clapping ceremony, with closing remarks from President Funaki. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to all of you who helped clean up the venue afterwards. Thank you very much to everyone for their cooperation, which contributed to the success of the event. Although there may have been some shortcomings, we believe it was a homely gathering. We are delighted if everyone enjoyed themselves.

Finally, the year 2024 began with a devastating earthquake in the Noto Peninsula. Many people are still living under inconvenient conditions, so we prepared donation boxes for this cause at this year’s New Year’s Party. A total of $315 in donations was collected, and using the exchange rate of $1 = ¥148.12 on the day, we sent ¥46,658 to the Ishikawa Prefecture Joint Fundraising Association’s Reiwa 6 Noto Peninsula Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund via Japan Post Bank. Thank you very much to everyone for their generous donations.
