Dear Members,
This year’s Aki Matsuri (Fall Festival), sponsored by the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP), was held on Saturday, September 12, from 2–9 pm at Schauffele Plaza in Ardmore, PA. At our booth, we showcased Ton-ton Zumo (paper sumo) and a coin drop game, while also distributing JAGP brochures to prospective members.
The festival turned out to be a great success. Our booth had a steady line of young children waiting their turn, and many came back again and again after their first try. Parents of kids who won multiple prizes told us it “saved them on snacks for the week!” As a result, our prizes ran out sooner than expected, and we had to close up shop shortly after 6 pm.
Our goal in joining this year’s festival was to contribute to the community by introducing traditional Japanese games, and we’re happy to say that goal was fully achieved.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our generous sponsors, Nissin Foods USA and Meiji America Inc., as well as to everyone who volunteered, both in the preparation stage and on the day of the event.
Special thanks go to Joe Courtney, who spent the entire day playing paper sumo matches against the kids, and to Sachiko Houck, who prepared the paper sumo materials. Even though many of our volunteers were meeting each other for the first time that day, they worked together seamlessly as a team, adapting on the fly and helping out wherever needed. Our staff, too, had a truly happy time seeing so many children’s smiling faces.
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, this year’s festival was once again a wonderful event. Thank you all so much.
Sincerely,
JAGP Event Committee
